The requirements for this type of visa are slightly different according to the typology of work. Please read carefully the specific instructions and then go to the Documents Check-List below.
1. Domestic workers, home-care givers, seasonal labourers, highly skilled professionals, managers, university lecturers and professors, researchers, translators, interpreters, personnel in training, nurses, maritime workers, entertainment industry personnel.
This visa is to be issued pending the “Nulla Osta” (entry clearance), to be requested by the Employer at the competent Italian Authority: “Sportello Unico per l’Immigrazione” (SUI – Unified Immigration Desk). When the Nulla Osta is granted, the Consulate will be notified by the SUI. The applicant must present a copy of the Nulla Osta at the visa interview.
2. Personnel employed in supplementary maritime services boarding Italian cruise ships and employed by foreign subcontractors.
The applicant must provide the following:
- contract between foreign company and Italian ship owner;
- enrollment of ship in International Register;
- enlistment contract.
3. Journalists and correspondents officially accredited in Italy and employed by foreign press or TV and radio broadcasters
The applicant must submit an online application to request a preliminary accreditation necessary to receive the Nulla Osta for the issuance of the visa. In particular the applicant must:
- fill out a form available at www.esteri.it, under “Area Giornalisti” and obtain the identification number (ID) which will appear at the end of the registration;
- electronically attach to the form a letter from the Director of the press organization addressed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Servizio Stampa e Informazione – Ufficio Accreditamento – stating that the applicant is appointed as press correspondent in Italy and indicating his/her qualification (journalist, photographer, operator, etc.) and the duration of the stay;
- contact the American Embassy in Italy with the ID number and asking to submit the Note Verbale online to request the accreditation.

Documents check-list for all the above categories:
- Visa Application Form. Please notice that all the names appearing on the passport must appear on the application form (all data must match those on the passport). The form must be dated and signed in front of a Visa Officer;
- Recent passport-size photograph, on white background, full face and front view, stapled/glued to the application form. Scanned or photocopied photos will NOT be accepted;
- Valid passport plus 1 copy of the page with photograph and expiration date. The passport or travel document must be valid at least three months after the visa expiration date. Please make sure the passport has at least two blank pages to affix the visa;
- For Non-US citizens: original and copy of Permanent Residence Card OR other US immigration document allowing re-entry into the United States (e.g., valid long-term US visa, Advanced Parole, etc.);
- Copy of Driver’s License or State ID as proof of residence in the jurisdiction of this Consulate General. If you recently moved and have not updated your ID, you must submit another proof of current address (e.g., utility bills, bank statements, etc.);
- Copy of the Nulla Osta from Italy;
- Confirmed flight reservation;
- Visa fee (under Consular Fees on home page): (non refundable) in the form of Money Order or cashier’s check, payable to the Consulate General of Italy in Chicago, with applicant’s name and address as the remitter;
- Return envelope: required in the event that applicants cannot collect the passport with the visa in person. You must provide a pre-paid return envelope trackable (please keep a copy of the tracking number, you must be able to track it yourself). We reccomend using FedEx or UPS..
