I have learned with profound sadness of the passing of President George H. W. Bush and I wish to offer you, the Bush family and the friendly American people my personal feelings of sincere and wholehearted condolences, along with those of the Italian people.
During his long and extraordinary career at the service of the American institutions and throughout his life President Bush has been able to act with foresight, balanced determination and courage, serving in the best way the interests of the United States, at home and abroad, and promoting the values of peace and of a solid transatlantic bond.
He did so by leading the country in an era marked by events of historical significance and by radical changes in the international order, to which President Bush contributed with authority and sense of responsibility.
In this very sad circumstance, with sincere sympathy and emotion, Italy is close to you, Mr. President, to President Bush’s family and to all the American nation in memory of a sincere friend.
