{"id":760,"date":"2023-08-07T11:39:27","date_gmt":"2023-08-07T16:39:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/conschicago.esteri.it\/?page_id=760"},"modified":"2026-03-17T10:12:30","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T15:12:30","slug":"matrimoni-in-italia","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/conschicago.esteri.it\/it\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/matrimoni-in-italia\/","title":{"rendered":"Matrimoni in Italia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Informazioni per cittadini USA che desiderano contrarre matrimonio in Italia (pagina solo in inglese)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Information for U.S. citizens wishing to get married in Italy<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>HOW AND WHERE TO APPLY FOR THE MARRIAGE LICENSE<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>U.S.<\/strong> couples wishing to get married in Italy must appear, in Italy, with two witnesses, before the Ufficiale di Stato Civile (Registrar) of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Italian<\/strong> city\/town<\/span> where the marriage will take place and file a declaration of intent to marry. This process is similar to applying for a marriage license in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>WEDDING CEREMONIES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Civil<\/strong> ceremonies are performed by the Ufficiale di Stato Civile or their proxy.<br \/>\n<strong>Religious<\/strong> ceremonies, performed by Roman Catholic clergy, do not require a separate civil ceremony. Once the ceremony has been performed, the clergy will\u00a0register the marriage\u00a0with the local vital records\u00a0office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>REQUIRED DOCUMENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The list below is general and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> exhaustive. Please contact the competent offices of the selected municipality in Italy and follow their specific procedures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">U.S. citizens must submit the following documents to the &#8220;Ufficiale di Stato Civile&#8221; in Italy when applying for a declaration of intent to marry in Italy:<br \/>\n1. US passports (U.S. Armed Forces personnel must submit military ID);<br \/>\n2. Certified<strong> long form copy<\/strong> of birth certificates for the bride and groom, duly legalized with the<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/conschicago.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/apostilla.pdf\">Apostille<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/conschicago.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Lista-Traduttori-25.06.2025.pdf\"><strong>Translated into Italian<\/strong><\/a>;<br \/>\n3. Evidence of termination of any previous marriage (final divorce or annulment decrees or death certificates);<br \/>\n4. For anyone under the age of 18, the authorization from the Minor Court is needed;<br \/>\n5. <strong>Affidavit<\/strong> from U.S. legal authority certifying there are no impediments to the marriage under U.S. law. (<em>see below for details, a+b<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since there is no federal registry of marriages in the United States, requirement n. 5\u00a0is fulfilled by providing\u00a0<strong>BOTH<\/strong> the following affidavits (<em>a+b<\/em>):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>a)<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Affidavit signed before a U.S. Consular Officer in Italy &#8211; &#8220;Dichiarazione giurata&#8221;<\/strong> in which applicants declare that there are no impediments to their marriage under U.S. law.\u00a0 In this case applicants must contact the <strong>U.S. Embassy\/Consulate in Italy<\/strong> for an appointment prior to departing the United States (for a list visit this<strong><a id=\" website \" href=\"http:\/\/travel.state.gov\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" name=\" website \">\u00a0website<\/a><\/strong>) and\u00a0submit the following documents to the U.S. Consular Officer:<br \/>\n1. proof of U.S. citizenship: passport\/naturalization certificate, or birth certificate evidencing birth in the United States;<br \/>\n2. U.S. Armed Forces personnel must also submit a consent to the marriage from their Commanding officer;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>b) Affidavit signed by four witnesses before an <a href=\"https:\/\/conschicago.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Consular-jurisdiction.pdf\">Italian Consular Office in the U.S.<\/a>\u00a0OR<\/strong> before an authorized Agency in Italy (Pretura, Mayor, local public registrar, notary), in which the witnesses declare\u00a0that \u201c<em>there are no impediments to the marriage under the U.S. law<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The affidavit (&#8220;<strong>Atto Notorio&#8221;<\/strong>) is sworn to by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">four witnesses<\/span>, who must be over 18 and unrelated to either of the two parties or to each other. The sworn witnesses must appear in person, with a valid ID (Passport), before the Italian Consular Officer in the U.S. having jurisdiction over your place of residence.<br \/>\nThe affidavit will state that the witnesses swear under the penalty of perjury that they personally know the U.S. citizen, that they personally know that the U.S. citizen is a resident of the U.S., that they personally know that the U.S. citizen has never been married or is now divorced or widowed, that to the best of their knowledge the U.S. citizen is free to marry in accordance with the local laws, and that there are no objections for the U.S. citizen to be married in Italy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To apply for an Atto Notorio with this Consulate, please send an email with a copy of the following documentation to <a href=\"mailto:legale.chicago@esteri.it\">legale.chicago@esteri.it<\/a> Please be informed that this document <strong>is valid for a maximum of 90 days.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/conschicago.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Richiesta-atto-notorio.pdf\"><strong>Atto notorio request form<\/strong><\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Bride and Groom\u2019s certified copies of birth certificates duly legalized with the Apostille;<\/li>\n<li>Italian translation\u00a0of the above birth certificates;<\/li>\n<li>Photocopies of Bride and Groom\u2019s U.S. passports and driver\u2019s license;<\/li>\n<li>Photocopies of the <strong>four<\/strong> witnesses driver\u2019s licenses;<\/li>\n<li>Fees:\u00a0Fees must be paid in US Dollars.
