{"id":5776,"date":"2026-03-23T10:25:55","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T15:25:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/conschicago.esteri.it\/?page_id=5776"},"modified":"2026-03-24T11:44:23","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T16:44:23","slug":"matrimonio","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/conschicago.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/stato-civile\/matrimonio\/","title":{"rendered":"Marriages \/ Civil Unions"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">REGISTRATION IN ITALY OF A MARRIAGE CELEBRATED ABROAD<\/h3>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>GENERAL RULE<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A marriage celebrated abroad has legal effect in Italy only after it has been <strong>registered with the competent Italian Municipality (Comune)<\/strong>, usually the Comune linked to the Italian citizen\u2019s AIRE registration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The marriage record, <strong>issued by the foreign Civil Status Authority<\/strong>, must be submitted as an <strong>original or certified copy<\/strong>, <strong>duly legalized (Apostille)<\/strong> and <strong>accompanied by an Italian translation<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe documentation must be submitted <strong>by the applicants<\/strong> to the Italian Consulate with jurisdiction over their place of residence, which will <strong>forward it to the Italian Comune<\/strong> for registration in the civil status records.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Alternatively, where permitted by Italian law, the Italian citizen may submit the marriage record <strong>directly to the relevant Italian Comune<\/strong> (art. 12, paragraph 11, Presidential Decree 396\/2000).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Marriage records issued by countries that are parties to the <strong>Vienna Convention of September 8, 1976<\/strong>, and drafted on a <strong>multilingual form<\/strong>, are <strong>exempt from legalization and translation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>IMPORTANT \u2013 DIFFERENT DOCUMENT NAMES, SAME REQUIRED CONTENT<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Marriage documents are issued by <strong>different States and Counties<\/strong>, each with its own format and terminology. What matters is <strong>not the document name<\/strong>, but that <strong>all required information is clearly included<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>REQUIRED INFORMATION THAT MUST APPEAR ON THE DOCUMENTS<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The documents submitted (Marriage Certificate\/License and Marriage Application and Record, or equivalent), <strong>taken together<\/strong>, must include:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>both spouses\u2019 <strong>full dates and places of birth<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>both spouses\u2019 <strong>parents\u2019 names<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>the <strong>exact place of celebration (city, not only the County)<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>the <strong>date of the marriage ceremony<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If this information is split across two documents, <strong>both documents are required<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>REQUIRED DOCUMENTS<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>1. APPLICATION FOR REGISTRATION OF MARRIAGE (<a href=\"https:\/\/conschicago.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Modulo-Registrazione-Matrimonio_Chicago-1.pdf\">FORM<\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You must submit the <strong>application form for the registration of the marriage certificate<\/strong>, fully completed and signed by the Italian spouse. If both spouses are Italia, two forms must be submitted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>2. <\/strong><strong>MARRIAGE DOCUMENTS (CERTIFIED COPIES)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You must submit <strong>certified copies <\/strong>or<strong> originals<\/strong> of:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Marriage Certificate\/License<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Marriage Application and Record<\/strong> <em>(or equivalent document)<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Marriage Certificate alone is <strong>usually not sufficient<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>3. APOSTILLES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>For marriages celebrated in the United States, both marriage documents<\/strong> must bear an <strong>Apostille<\/strong> issued by the Secretary of State of the U.S. State that produced the document.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If the marriage was <strong>celebrated in a country other than the United States<\/strong>, the Apostille (or other required legalization) must be <strong>obtained from the competent authorities of that foreign country<\/strong>, in accordance with local regulations and applicable international conventions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>4.
