Dear friends,
I wish to send you and your families my most sincere wishes for the holiday season.
The year that draws to a close has been intense and important for Italy and the United States. The historical friendship that binds our two peoples is based on a commonality of values that is at the heart of our democracies and that is nourished by the principles enshrined in our constitutional charters, starting with the respect of fundamental freedoms and human rights.
This year we had two meetings at the highest level: Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte met President Trump at the White House in late July, and the President of the Senate, Maria Elisabetta Alberti Casellati, visited the United States in June. These two visits confirmed the strategic nature of our relationships and the goals of peace and prosperity that unite us. Our economic and commercial relations continue to grow, with an exchange that has now exceeded 90 billion dollars, while cooperation in science, technology and space is very intense and represents a real highlight. Italian history, culture and art never cease to amaze and leave unforgettable memories on the millions of American citizens who visit our country every year.
During 2018 I visited many states of this wonderful country. Every single trip was an opportunity to meet with the local authorities and especially with you, and with the many American friends of Italian origin, who represent the deepest bond between our two Countries. Your experiences and successes are a source of pride for me. You are the reflection of a dynamic, innovative country that looks to the future. With your contribution, and that of the diplomatic-consular network, the Trade Commission offices, the Cultural Institutes and all the institutions that represent Italy, we have achieved many results, which we can be proud of. My sincere thanks to all of you for your extraordinary passion and above all for the great affection for Italy.
The year that is about to begin will see us dedicated to further deepening our relations with the United States in every field. The year 2019 will bring new ideas, new opportunities and new incentives to enrich our strong friendship. Many commitments, indeed, that we are determined to face with energy and enthusiasm also thanks to your support.
